Abba Yah desires our service, that we serve him. But just as we learn to honor him by honoring our earthly parents, and love him by loving our neighbor, we must learn to serve him by serving others. The idea of being a servant is not highly held in society. In fact, being served is the true ideal. If one has servants, he or she is seen as someone of stature; one who has achieved success in this world. And even though some people hold occupations that force them to serve others, those same people look forward to going on vacation to a resort or the like where they can be granted their own servants and be pampered for a week or more.

Yeshua does not value individuals by the number of servants they have or the level of service they enjoy; instead, he measures us according to the service we provide to others. And we’re talking about childlike service, where a child, without grumbling or hesitation, is willing and happy to fetch your slippers when you ask. This kind of service is what makes us great in Yeshua’s eyes.

“An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But Yeshua, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side and said to them, ‘Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.’ “

—Luke 9:46 – 48

Even today, people who profess to be servants of Yeshua still vie for high positions in churches and assemblies, or to be the point person at small gatherings. They seek to be teachers, leaders, and people who others will look up to, not realizing that simple servitude is what Yeshua intended for us in this walk. Bookstores and libraries are loaded with worldly books aimed at teaching you to be a leader, but we must learn to be servants. Many want to be the head chef, the CEO, and the top general, but hardly anyone desires to function at the very bottom in any field.

Yeshua himself, chief of all, came to serve humanity, by healing, feeding many, teaching the masses, and offering life and hope to those who received him. This is true service: giving of ourselves as often as we can to as many as we can. That does not mean that our service will always be accepted or appreciated, yet we must still offer that service and always be at the ready to serve. Some will turn away your kind word, or your offer to help in a given situation, but they simply do not realize that Yah has sent them one of his best servants. Still, we must continue to offer our service and be ready and willing to serve.

We must be like Yah’s servant Samuel, who, as a young boy, was eager and willing to be of service whenever the need arose. 1 Samuel 3 records Yah calling out to Samuel, but the word of Yah was rare in those days, for there was no frequent vision, according to verse 1. So, Samuel, thinking he heard the voice of the priest, Eli, answered:

“ ‘Here I am!’ and ran to Eli and said, ‘Here I am, for you called me.’ But he said, ‘I did not call; lie down again.’ So he went and lay down.’ “

—1 Samuel 3:4 – 5

Verses 6 – 9 reveal that Yah called for Samuel two more times, and Samuel mistook the voice for Eli both times, yet he eagerly and willingly arose, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am,” being ready to serve. This is recorded to demonstrate that Yah’s servants must always be available to serve. By having a willing heart to serve our neighbors, Yah will then be able to place us in service to himself, as seen in verses 10 – 21 of 1 Samuel 3.

Yah may require that you jump into service while you are on the way to work, or in the middle of a project. You may be sent on a detour or pulled away from something you deem important, and your plans and schedule may be disrupted at any time, but you have to be accepting of that fact and roll up your sleeves with a heart that is willing to do whatever it is he has in mind for you at that very moment. That is what being in Yah’s service looks like, and only those who operate at this level can fully serve their purpose.

Know also that these sporadic moments of service that will come when least expected are merely training exercises. Yah will use them to train you for your real service, just as each feast season, Israelites, and those joined to them, rehearse for the true fulfillment of the feasts and their real work in the Kingdom. The world borrows heavily from Yah in this regard, as soldiers in the military receive training in boot camp; actors rehearse for plays; and secular sports teams train during offseason in preparation for the main pagan event, among many other examples. Training for your purpose will involve you being thrust sporadically into situations where your service will be required; they will come at unpredictable times and in moments of seeming inconvenience. But you must always be ready to serve.

Yeshua elaborated on this kind of servant while telling a parable of his second coming:

“But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

“Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.”

—Matthew 24:43 – 47

WEEK 10

Those who are in Yah’s service do not seek fame or praise, nor do they serve simply to have people applaud their efforts. The true servants of Yah avoid the spotlight and seek to serve quietly, and with all humility. Yeshua’s brothers, who did not believe in him, correctly stated a point confirming this:

“For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly.”

—John 7:4

And Yeshua stated:

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”

—Matthew 6:1

While good deeds and righteous service should be performed in obscurity, that is not to be confused with the spreading of light and truth. Those are to be proclaimed openly. For Yeshua also commanded:

“What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.”

—Matthew 10:27

Over the next 3 weeks, I’m asking you to continue this journey with me; not a journey to figure out a career path, or how to busy yourself and fill your life with meaningless activities. In fact, we’ll be seeking to clear out the clutter and pare things down so you can focus on the most important aspect of your life: what it is Yah has truly called you to do in service to him.

Remember that our purpose, and our plans, must derive from Yah. This 12-week journey will involve listening to this message one week at a time, while applying its principles to your life. The 12 parts should not be binged in one go, otherwise it defeats the purpose of the journey. If you have already viewed the series one week at a time, then feel free to binge in another viewing.

THINGS TO DO OVER THE COURSE OF THE NEXT WEEK

First, listen to this message several times and review its various points.

Keep this in mind:
To be trained for my purpose, I must be ready and willing to serve at all times, and jump into service whenever and wherever the need arises.

Reflect on this verse of the week:

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.”

—Mark 10:45

Ask yourself this question:
Will I be able to say, “Here I am,” whenever Yah calls me to serve others, so that I might one day be prepared to fully serve him?
