As mortals, we ought to rely on the judgment and leading of one who cannot be fooled by appearances.

Shalom, and happy morning to you. As mere mortals, we can be fooled by appearances. We’re moved by beauty and good looks, sophisticated clothing, and things that appeal to the eye. And because of this human trait, the devil was able to lure our mother, Eve, to eat of the forbidden tree. She first saw that it was “good for food” and was “a delight to the eyes,” according to Genesis 3:6. And since we can be fooled in this way, by men and women with ulterior motives who merely dress up to play a part that appeals to our sensibilities, we ought to rely on the judgment and leading of one who cannot be fooled in this way.

In the book of Job, chapter 10 verse 4, a question is asked of Yah:

4 Have you eyes of flesh? Do you see as man sees?

—Job 10:4

The answer, of course, is no. And this is why we are not to rely on our own eyes when it comes to certain matters, for with them we cannot discern spiritually.

7 But Yah said to Samuel, do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For Yah sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but Yah looks on the heart.

—1 Samuel 16:7
